  1. Ya. Write everything you find similar or different between the charcters. They way they perceive things or the way they react on a particular situation.

  2. It can, yes. Especially if their physical features are an important part of the story. For example, the Hunchback of NOtre Dame -- the "hunch" is definitely part of it!

  3. do the "sames" on one side and the  "different" on the other

  4. if you want it to... then sure. it's YOUR essay. you decide what you put in it

  5. In a comparative essay, I would say this; mention the physical attributes only if you can glean meaning from them (e.g. in 'Animal Farm', consider how the different species are portrayed, the clothing that is eventually adopted; in 'Richard III' you might consider how Richard's deformities have contributed to the formation of his ruthless character). The main area you need to focus on would typically be the ideals the characters hold, what each character purports to be. For example, compare leadership styles between Jack and Ralph in 'Lord of the Flies', or how K in 'The Trial' interprets absurdism compared to Meursault in 'The Stranger' by Albert Camus. I think close analysis of characters rather than superficial comparisons is where the bulk of the marks are.
