Compare process versus product as it relates to creativity?

Process is the act of doing or making something.

Where as the product is achieving a specific result.

For example:

Telling a child exactly what and how to make something. So everyone would have the "same" end result.

Concentrating on the process, allows a child to make something as they see it. Like a blue tree, or a lopsided house. No one else will have exactly what someone else does.

In layman's terms:

The process: The steps of doing the project

The product: The finished activity. In Early Childhood Education it is taught that the process is much more important than the product. Through the process children use creativity and imagination to create.

Focusing on "process" means that the child is involved more in the experience involved in creating.  There is not a specific outcome for the project, just the fun of creating it.  When schools focus more on "product", they are looking for a specific end result from the project.  They want the child to manufacture a product that looks similar to one another, and limits creativity in the child's expression of art.

If the children are allowed to explore the materials freely during the process, they will manipulate and use the materials provided in their own way - expressing creativity in them. Whereas, if the children are told to make a "product" which invlove mainly in following direction rather than exploring and expressing ideas.

However, I personally think that there must be a balance between process and product... best way is to scaffold.
