Comparison:

Older people have made their mistakes and learned from them.  They have watched History in action.  The societal problems that have been solved, they have seen the solutions in action.

Younger people are currently having experiences and are currently making mistakes.  (Everyone does)  The issues at hand are right on top of us and most of us can't see the forest for the trees.

I'm not saying that our elders are "smarter" than we are, I'm saying that if someone who came before you has experienced what you're currently experiencing why not let them share that experience with you and make it easier for you to navigate through it?
