  1. Igneous rock is flowing from the mid-ocean ridge and pushing the Earth's plates apart increasing the distance from the Americas and Europe each year.  Consequently, therefore, ergo, thus , hence, the rocks further from the ridge should be older as they are pushed away as new forms.

    Basically, the newest rock is the one that's spewing out of the rift; the oldest is the one furthest from the rift.

    The speed at which the rift forms is different from zone to zone, and can go as high as 20-25 cm per year. You must also take into account the fact that the Atlantic Ocean itself is widening, The American and Eurasia/Africa are drifting apart.
