Comparison El Classico – Carles Puyol vs. Ricardo Carvalho
Now this is going to be a clash of the titans. This is going to be a clash between two tactical and physical centre backs. The captain of the Catalan side Carles Puyol is considered to be one of the best centre backs in the world at the
moment while on the other hand, the Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho is nothing less than a menace not only in the air but also on the ground.
If the midfielders are not the ones that are going to be making the difference during the El Classico this season, it is definitely the Real Madrid newly signed centre back Ricardo Carvalho who is going to be making a difference for them.
Since his arrival, Real Madrid did not lose a single game. It is true that it can be considered as a “Mourinho” factor but no one can forget how Carvalho was a one man wall while playing for the Champions League winning Porto side and also the Premier League
winning Chelsea side.
This time round he is a part of one of the best teams in the world and he is performing extraordinarily under Jose Mourinho – the same coach who was with him when his career started in the Portuguese club Porto.
If there was one thing that the Real Madrid defence was lagging last year, it was a centre back who could be physical and get out of trouble easily. Carvalho is definitely the man for the job. He is experienced and he is as physical as
any good centre back should be. He is never afraid to slide down even against the best defender in the world and he might be the key player to change the cause of the game as he is the one who is capable of blocking the strikes from not only David Villa and
Pedro Rodriguez but also the Argentinean maestro Lionel Messi who is the biggest threat for Jose Mourinho’s side.
On the other hand, Carles Puyol is nothing less than him. In fact the Catalan just might be better than Carvalho. Puyol has been in charge of his club for quite a long time and he knows the timing for each and everything. Carvalho has
recently joined Real Madrid and he is still trying to become a part of their system while Puyol has been there and done that in Barcelona while being the senior most player in their side. Last season it was Puyol who was marking Cristiano Ronaldo and he did
a wonderful job as the Portuguese captain could not find his way through the defensive walls of the Catalan giants. However, this time round things are a bit different as Ronaldo has found the same old goal scoring form that he once had when he was playing
under one of the best coaches in the world, Sir Alex Ferguson.
These two are definitely going to be the difference makers in the game because Carvalho has a job to stop Lionel Messi, the best player for Barcelona while on the other hand Puyol is going to be given the job of stopping Cristiano Ronaldo
who is currently the best player for Real Madrid.
