  1. YES the lens is compatible. It will mount on the camera perfectly. It will meter properly it will send information back to the camera, it will work with all speedlights like the SB800 perfectly.

BUT, it is not an AF-I/ AF-S lens it is an AF lens. So on the D40 and D60 you will have to maually focus this lens. Its not hard to do. If you can use the ring to change the focal length for zoom you can turn the ring to focus just as easily.

This lens is a reasonable choice for a reasonable price. It has great crispness up to 200 mm and is a little ( but only a little ) soft 200 to 300 . to quaote ken rockwell on this lens "If you want complete sharpness wide open at 200 mm and beyond you have to spend at least five times as much on a huge 80-200mm f/2.8 or ten times as much on the 80-400mm VR." If you alread have a lens to 300 the question to ask is if that extra zoom will is really needed for what you do

Added: Its not difficult to shoot things what move with a manual focus lens. It only takes a little practice. I was shooting basketball and football games in the mid 70's when no one had ever invented autofocus. And I am only pretty fair as a photographer. So if I can do it most anyone can learn to .

  3. I'd like to stress the fact that it will not autofocus on the D40/x/60. This will make it very difficult to use while shooting anything that moves...but it will work, as long as you manual focus. With no AF-S and the focus ring being on the very front of the lens, it may make it even harder to use and get consistent results.
