Competency based question (dealing with abusive people at work) - please help, i dont know what to write up ?

please describe an occasion when you challenged someone behaviour that was abusive, inappropriate?

what did you do and say?

i dont know what to write, as i havnt come across with anyone abusive.

i dont want to say i never came across with abusive people, as then they might reject my job application saying i wont be able to deal with agrresive people and dont have experience dealing with aggressive people.

  1. If the question on the application is, how would you deal with the situation, I would put,

    I would first approach the person and explain to them, in a calm and reasonable manner, that their behaviour is unacceptable and I will have no choice but to report the matter to my superiors, if it continues.

  2. It is about being appropriately assertive. Always be polite and stand your ground. For eg. Please don't speak AT me like that as I feel I cannot help you. Now how may I assist you?'

    Stay on this track no matter what. Remain passive and helpful without letting the abuse get you down. Generally it is their issue not yours - they've just had a bad day and you appear as an easy target. When abusers are confronted they nearly always back down.

  3. Violent people are weak . Don't show any weakness by mimicing their behavior against them. As long as you did nothing wrong , you don't have to worry about what others say or do . Just approach them in wise manner ; if they insist on violent behavior , just report it .

  4. Do not match their behavior. Keep your voice low, even if theirs is rising. Try to figure out what is upsetting them, and resolve the issue behind the upset.
