Competition will earn spot for players in Houston Astros – MLB News
The Houston Astros’ newly hired general manager Jeff Luhnow considers depth in the line-up as one of the priorities of the club. Speaking on the team’s future plan, he commented that the competition in the team shall earn the players the spots they want.
"One of the priorities for this offseason was to put ourselves in position where we had some depth, some flexibility and some choice," Luhnow said. "That's why the team, going into this spring, will have competition for every spot out there, and everybody
on this team is going to have to earn their spot."
It is pertinent to recall here that the Houston Astros are going through a new phase now with the coming of new owner, Jim Crane. His arrival came at a time when the club had only recently, much to the disappointment of the fans, lost more than 100 games
in the season.
The rebuilding phase is on in the club as they tried 20 rookies in 2011. With a year’s experience to their credit, all the rookies will have the opportunity to earn the respective spots in the 40-man roster.
This competition within the club will have an understandable determining impact on strengthening the side to take up the challenge in the division. It is, therefore, expected that the club shall witness a considerable ascent with the passage of time.
This factor is what fills the fans with excitement. The Astros only recently celebrated their 50th anniversary of the team that brought in all the former and currently players. The upcoming season is under focus, owing to the presence of agile
players.
"It was neat to see so many Astros players from years past, as well as so many of the guys from this year's team," Astros’ fan Jessica Vadasz said. "It gets you excited about the upcoming season."
All in all, it is only the commencement of the season and the Astros playing against the teams in their Division that will ascertain the progress that the club might have made recently after the changes that came their way with the arrival of a new owner
and general manager.
