Question:

Competitive Success as an adult?

I took up figure skating again in January after a 10 year break. I'm 25 years old and I'm now at level 7 of the Skate UK programme. I really love the sport and would like to achieve as much as I can. Is it possible to have any competitive success as an adult?

  1. Of course. There are many oppritunities as an adult. You may want to join o local skating club and sign up for special events and private lessons.

  2. I restarted skating when I was 19 and started doing adult competitions at age 25 (in Canada and USA, NOT ISI ones, but regular Skate Canada events and USFSA events). I did quite well and had a blast. I even learned 3 double jumps and an axel as an adult, so anything in possible. NO you won't go to Olympics, but you can compete and have fun.

  3. I started skating in my mid 20's . . . it IS possible to have competitve success as adult!!

I never even thought of competing.  But once I started competiting, I couldn't stop.  Competing was challenging - besides tackling skating itself.  Really, competitive success can mean different things to different skaters - it's not necessarily just about "winning".  I got to the Adult Gold level (USFSA) with doubles . . . and although I do not currently skate, I look back on the whole competition experience and think yah, on the whole, it was "successful" . . . in the sense that I "did" achieve more that I ever thought I would in my wildest dreams . . . and enjoyed the heck out of doing so.  And hey, if you happen to rank pretty high, that's pretty good!  Hang out in the realm of Adult competitions long enough and other adult competitors will get to know your name and your skating . . . you'll be recognized - hee hee!!

Here are some links for adult competitions in the UK to give you an idea.  There is a lot of info online about Adult skating in the US, but not so much with other countries, so hopefully some of these can give you some info about UK Adult skating.

  4. Definitely. There are many recreational and local ADULT competitions you can compete at! I'm not sure about UK, but in USA, the ISI program even holds Adult Championships and Adult Nationals... enjoy the sport! :)
