  1. grease it back!

    and use bobbypins.

  2. Hi Dinklez,

It a show, my company always stresses the need to keep the hair up and the frizzies away.  This is how we do it.

When you go to the competition, always bring hairspray and gel to touch up.  I would arrive a few minutes earlier than call time and do my hair then, so that in the car the wind wouldn't mess up my hair.  This is how I did my buns:

    You'll need:

Ponytail holders (I would get a whole package -- no funky colors; try to match your hair!)

Barrettes (again, try to match your hair)

Bobby pins (" ") (The thin kind, not the ones you put in your bun, but the ones that have no space between the two prongs)

    Hairspray

Hair gel (I would use maximum hold)

It's much easier to put up the hair into a neat bun while it's damp, but the danger there is that it's much more likely to get bumps, so be careful.  If you're the kind of person that looks over bumps and creases easily, I would wait until it's dry.

You're going to need about four ponytail holders, thickish ones, not the small wimpy ones, depending on how much it takes to get every single hair that fits into your bun, and if you have different lengths in your hair, like layers.  Put your hair into a ponytail without any bumps.  The center of the bun will be where the base of the ponytail is, so put the ponytail at the desired height.  Usually low buns are more discreet and easier to wear hats, headpieces, etc., but high buns are more generally accepted.  Talk to your team captain, director, or teammates to find out.

Now, twist the ponytail around the base of itself so it turns into a swirl.  Since you have short hair, you might just be able to skip this step.  If you do, then just put another ponytail holder over it so it curls onto itself.  Usually you want to curve your hair in such a way so that you don't see any sides, it's just a big flat dome of hair, if that makes any sense.  Hide the ponytail holders if you can, or just use clear ones.  They're available at almost any beauty supply store.

Next, get some barrettes.  I know bobby pins usually work, but barrettes are long lasting and easier to adjust and use.  The thing is that you can't have silver or metallic ones; it's distracting, you might lose points (but I don't know, I was never on a competition team), and it looks horrible in the stage lights.  Get some to match your hair (they might be a bit more expensive, but it's worth it).  Use that to pin back big pieces of hair that didn't fit into your bun.  Now, use bobby pins to touch it up a bit and get rid of big frizzies that hairspray and gel generally won't tackle.

Now, get hairspray and/or gel.  Gel is for the big stuff, to keep it in place as a security measure in case the barrettes fail (which they probably won't, but you can never be too sure).  Hairspray is to get those small frizzies.  Gel can do that, but usually you use hairspray just because it's easier.  Always use a lot more than you need.  You never want to take chances.  And after every dance (if you're doing multiple ones), and before the next (if you have a long enough break), touch it up.  Add some.  Remember, hair can always be washed; it's gross and makes your hair dirty and stringy beyond belief, but it fairly easy to wash out.

Hope this helped.  Keep dancing and good luck in your competition!♥

  3. Comb gel through it as you pull it back.

After the gel dries  secure any loose pieces with a bobbypin
