  2. For dressage the tip is lots and lots of practice.  Ensure that your horse is well schooled.  Get a copy of the dressage test that you intend to do and break it down into chunks and practice the required moves.

    * Ensure that you ride straight down the centre line

    * Ensure that your horse does not fall in when working on circles

    * Ensure that your horse stands square when halting

    * Ensure that all of your lines are straight and that your horse has the correct bend when going around corners.

On the day of the test, ensure that your horse is well turned out, tack clean, horse plaited.  Ensure that you are riding with the correct tack for that level.  Try and smile when you are riding your test  to show that you are actually enjoying yourself!

For showjumping, you need to have a well schooled, obedient horse which you can get by doing flatwork.  You need to ensure that your horse will lengthen and shorten his stride.  Get your horse moving forwards nicely.  Again, do lots of transitions with your horse.

Introduce trotting poles and practice shortening and lengthening the stride.  Introduce grid work too.

When competing, remember to think positively, ride a clear round in your head.  Remember to look up and over to your next jump and always ride for the next fence!

Finally, it may be worth your time getting some lessons with a qualified instructor to help you with your goals.  Also, ensure that your horse is fit enough for the level of work that you are asking him to do.  If you are doing more work, it may be necessary to increase the feed or review his feeding.

No-one can guarantee you a win, but the more you put in the better your results will be.
