Do we mean barley?

We clean and prepare our planting equipment immediately after using it, and make sure there is mouse bait close to it so that it does not become a mouse nest.

We would meticulously avoid growing barley in successive years on the same soil.



Planting of barley would start where I live about mid April and must be completed before mid may.

If soil is too wet, we wait. If it is too dry we hurry.

We plant into land that has been in clover the preceding year. We would have used a very light distribution of  fresh  manure tea. distributed either before or after planting seed, but well before emergence.

Barley is at risk of falling down before harvest if we use too much manure.

We have to spray for weeds based on when they emerge.

Several times during the summer we have to chase the cows out of the barley and fix the  fence.

We make a point to get the harvesting equipment ready to work well before harvest time, and again after the harvest is over.

Because there is a month of variation in planting time, and barley had at least a month of variation in its maturity, from short term varieties to long, one can have two months difference in when harvest time starts.  We make a point to do moisture tests to ensure that our crop has less than 15% moisture. If it has more it is likely to heat in storage. It is this which determines when we start combining.

We do not harvest until about 11AM so that dew is dried off. We also have to stop most evenings by 7PM for the same reason.

Because we live between the southern Great Lakes, we have a lot of dew, and often harvesting is made difficult by having wet soil, so wet in some years as to have tractors sink into a spring in the  field. Our latitude is 46N, and we have stopped growing barley.
