Complete story of quarter-finals of AVC Continental Women’s Beach Volleyball (Part 1)
The AVC Continental Women’s Beach Volleyball Cup is underway in China from 19-24 October, 2010. The Holiday Beach in Haikou, China has been the host of this double-gender championship, which welcomed 49 beach volleyball couples. A total of 23 Women’s duos
embarked on the scene and demonstrated great skills in their matches. At this time of the year, China has severe weather conditions but still the players have amazed the audience with their stellar performances. The action was started with the first round
pool-play matches and now the tournament has slightly inched toward the final phase.
The quarter-finals of the Continental Women’s Beach Volleyball Cup were played on Friday, October 22, 2010. The following teams qualified for the quarter-final combats:

China (2 Pairs) Vietnam Thailand (2 Pairs) Chinese Taipei Japan Kazakhstan
China vs. Vietnam 2-0 (21-10, 21-11)
China’s top-seeded pair of Xue Chen and Zhang Xi clawed their way to the quarter-final by beating Mutsumi Ozaki and Hiroyo of Japan with a score 2-0 on Thursday. Xue/Zhang enjoyed the top form since the start of Continental Beach Volleyball Championship.
They clean-swept the early phase of the tournament and qualified for the “final four” stage. In the quarter-final match, Chinese duo was put up with Truong Thi Yen and Nguyen of Vietnam.
China opened the match with a very strong impression. The team had enough international exposure and got full advantage of their physique and experience over the Vietnam’s pair. Zhang was on serve and she rolled the ball toward the point. Xue also played
a vital role and they had a good start by scoring early points with the help of killing shots. After scoring two points, Zhang took a bigger run-up and served the ball, which held in the air for short time. She had hit the ball with plenty of power and there
was no chance for Vietnam’s defender to stop it. China picked up lead and continued with success afterwards.
Vietnam’s Nguyen tried nice attack attempts and grabbed attention for her quick moves but Chinese side had the right solution for her. They stood in the way of Nguyen’s spikes and didn’t allow her to score points. China was already leading the score; they
contributed a few more points with incredible spikes and covered the length of first set. China won the first set by posting 21-10.
After dropping the first set, Vietnam struggled to level the score and save the match. However, China’s pair was all shaped up to launch their power over Vietnam and capture a slot in the semi-final match. They hit more adverse shots in second set and put
pressure on the opposite side. Vietnam couldn’t stand their strong attack and gave way to China to score points. China’s Xue poked the ball over the net with great skill and didn’t leave a choice for Vietnam’s players to handle it. Vietnam suffered the set
back and accepted defeat with a big margin. China claimed the second set with the help of 21-11 on the scoreboard. The top-seeded Xue/Zhang confirmed their participation in the semi-final, which was scheduled to be played on Saturday.
Thailand vs. Chinese Taipei 2-0 (21-16, 21-14)
Thailand’s Kamoltip Kulna and Yupa Phokrongploy were also among the qualifiers of quarter-final as they outplayed Indonesian pair of Irawati and Wijayanti in the previous match. Thailand was joined by Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final show. Chinese Taipei’s
pair comprised of Kou Naihan and Huimin Chang who exhibited great game and clinched a spot in the quarter-final match.
