Completely new Spanish Davis Cup squad ready to take on Kazakhstan in February – Tennis News
World number two, Rafael Nadal, is not part of the Davis Cup squad of Spain that will contest the first round battle against the team of Kazakhstan in February. The squad that is announced is entirely different from the one
that contested against the Argentinean team in Seville in December 2011. David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez are given rest whilst the likes of world number eleven, Nicolas Almagro, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez are
handed over the responsibility to see their country through.
Spain won the Davis Cup tournament last year, beating the Argentinean team in December. Soon after the victory all four players apologized to participate in the Davis cup 2012 due to hectic tennis schedule and fatigue issues
that rise from playing non-stop tennis throughout the calendar year. Another reason for not participating in 2012’s Davis Cup tournament was that all four players wanted the young contestants to step up and take earn the right to represent their nation at
an elite platform.
Nadal is a world class act, taking part in all tournaments and reaching to the advanced stages of most of them which leaves very little time for him to recover completely and get ready for the next tournament. The wear and
tear of the body especially for the Spanish players is immense because all of them are known warriors who don’t give up on any stage of the match, fighting it till the end. It completely grinds their body to max and leaves a lot of bruises that heal slowly.
New captain of the Spain’s Davis Cup team, Alex Corretja, realized the effort put in by his elite performers and decided to pick up a complete new squad for the year’s first Davis Cup tie. It is good to see the Spanish Tennis
Federation is considerate of the fact that players need rest and should be allowed to concentrate on their individual careers after they have successfully proved their worth as nation heroes. Nadal and Ferrer will look to built upon their respective title
tallies this year and therefore are sidelined from performing a duty for their nation. They have already done enough to make their country proud that they should not be drilled with any other extra task.
Massive responsibility rests with the 11th ranked Almagro as he leads his team to their first conquest against Kazakhstan in Oviedo, Spain.
