When filling in a self assessment online if you are subcontracted do you fill it in under "employee" or "self employed"

Subcontractors are generally self employed.

Do you receive a payslip showing tax and NI deductions? If not then you will be self employed.

Is he under the Construction Industry Scheme?

OK - he is self employed then. He has a basic 20% tax deducted without any personal allowance. Remember he can claim back expenses such as tools, fuel, van costs (if he runs his own van) and safety wear.
