  1. x² - 4x = -2

    (x-2)² - 2² = -2

    (x-2)² = 2

    x-2 = +/-√2

    x = √2 + 2

    OR

    x = 2 - √2

  2. x² - 4x + 2 = 0

    (x-2)² + 2 - (2)² = 0

    (x-2)² - 2 = 0

    by using a² - b² = (a-b)(a+b)

    (x-2)² - (√2)² = 0

    (x-2-√2) (x-2+√2) = 0

    x = 2 + √2  or  x = 2 - √2

  3. x² - 4x + 2 = 0

    x² - 4x + 4 = 2

    (x - 2)² = 2

    x - 2 = ±√2

    x = 2 ± √2

  4. x2-4x+2=0

    => x2-4x+4-2-4=0                   I added 4 and subtracted 4, so everything is balanced.

    I added four because I look the term with the x raised to the first power, cut it in half, then I squared it. 4/2=2, 2^2=4

    So   x2-4x+4-2+4=(x2-4x+4)-2

                             =(x-2)^2-2=0

    = (x-2)^2=2

       (x-2)= plus or minus sqrt 2

    x=2 plus or minus sqrt 2

  5. (x² - 4x + 4) + 2 - 4 = 0

    (x - 2)² = 2

    x - 2 = ± √2

    x = 2 ± √2

  6. x² - 4x + 2 = 0

    x² - 4x = -2

    x² - 4x + 4 = -2 + 4

    (x-2)² = 2

    x - 2 = ± √2

    x = 2 ± √2

  7. x^2-4x+2=0

    x^2-4x + ?= -2+?

    ? is half the coefficient of the x term, squared

    ?=(-2)^2, =4

    x^2-4x+4=-2+4

    (x-2)^2=2

    x-2=+/-rt(2)

    x=2+rt(2) or x=2-rt(2)

    If you need a number, rt(2)=1.4142

    x=2+1.4142 or 2-1.4142

    x=3.4142 or 0.5858
