  1. I would say that it's a double-edged sword.  Oversimplification and inspiration.

Easy answers can sometimes oversimplify things - war movies can be good vs. evil, ignoring the subtleties of such things as foreign policy and potential disconnects between a country's population and its military and elite.  Movie villains are often caricatures of foreigners - heavy accents, etc. - which may contribute to xenophobia.

Sometimes, fiction can cloud reality as viewers aren't sure where to draw the line.  As a case in point, the "CSI effect" is making criminal prosecution more difficult - not all cases have 100% proof or otherwise that viewers of the TV show would need for their own considerations of what is beyond reasonable doubt.

...but then again, some far-fetched ideas can bring about technological change (especially in sci-fi or action movies with a high-tech bent).  With time unrealistic can become realistic.  Think about all of James Bond's gadgets - the jet ski didn't exist until "The Spy Who Loved Me," and the film's scuba car is now being put into production by Rinspeed!
