  1. RGB component cables are for video only, no audio.

Green Plug * Y carries luma (brightness) information.

Blue Plug * Pb carries the difference between blue and luma (B - Y).

Red Plug * Pr carries the difference between red and luma (R - Y).

a green signal is not sent as the colour can be interpolated using the blue, red and luma information. This is done to save bandwidth.

You need all three cables plugged in for component video to work properly.

  2. Component cables are for video signal only, no audio signal is transmitted through them.

Composite cables (red, white, yellow) carry both audio and video signal.

Both don't necessarily have to be hooked up at the same time to work but you must have an audio signal , so if you are using the component video connection, then you must either use a digital audio connection (optical or coaxial), or use the composite audio connection (red, white).
