Component video cable question?

Is there a correlation between picture quality and price when buying component video cables for a progressive scan dvd player?

Don't always assume that is the case. Price differences could occur from where it is built (US made goods more expensive than things from Taiwan) it can also be the materials used (Gold Conductors are always the best) and how "well" it was made. I say search around online for reviews for products. Don't always assume the most expensive is the best (i got component cables for my game console that were 30 dollars less than the competitor's and they were reviewed to be very good)

You will be hard pressed to find a difference in picture quality really, with any good quality cable. The important thing is to make sure it is a real component video cable constructed with RG6 quad shield coaxial cable. It should consist of (3) 75 ohm coaxial cables. It should also have good quality gold plated connectors as stated. Gold connectors are always better than chrome. Gold will NOT harm the chrome.

I would recommend to get a reasonable priced cable for the amount of money you are spending on your gear.  If you're getting let's say, a $60 DVD player, then the $20 cables should do you good.  If you spend a $1000 on a player, then you might want to get a much more expensive pair of cables.  

And you might want to get better quality ones for HD sources, like an HD DVR for example.  Cables can make a difference, and if you are more tuned in to video you start seeing the differences :)

There is a bit of difference.

"Component" is a standard def cable. The coax used was designed to transfer the 4 Mhz max video signals.

Progressive video goes up to 13 Mhz.

HD video (720/1080) goes to 35 Mhz.

Most component cables do not come with bandwidth numbers so you cannot tell what frequency they were designed for.

My advice is to get custom cables designed for HD video. Places like BlueJeans sell them for about $58 for a six foot run.  

Monoprice might have cheaper prices, but I have found it hard to tell what cables have the 90-100 Mhz bandwidht needed. But check them both out.

Minimal, in fact buying the likes of gold plated connectors can be detrimental if the player hasn't got gold plated connectors as well.
