Component video w/ progressive scan VS. HDMI?

I have a DVD player that does not support HDDVD. It has HDMI out and component video out. It also has progressive scan but that can only be used with the component video. Should I go with the HDMI or the component/progressive scan?

  1. One thing to keep in mind about component, RGB; Component video output with progressive scan (Up-converting over component output is only available for unencrypted DVD discs such as home video and consumer-created contents.  Most commercially pressed DVD discs are CSS-encrypted and will be limited to 480i/480p output over component.  HDMI output is protected with HDCP and has no such restriction.)

    Go with the HDMI connection.

  2. Progressive scan is better on the eyes than the interlaced scan. As you have correctly pointed out, with component setting you can use progressive scan. It just means that with connections like the composite (Video, Audio left and right ), you can't use progressive.

HDMI is supposed to be a further improvement on Component and it carries video as well as audio. Many DVD players automatically switch to progressive scan on HDMI. Upscaling DVD players also provide progressive scan on HDMI and also interlaced for highest resolutions.

So first- if it has HDMI and component both, it is capable of providing progressive scan on both (though you might not have an option for interlaced standard resolution on hdmi)

Second - If you have an option try out both component and HDMI for yourself and see the quality difference. In different situations and setups, sometimes components look better and sometimes hdmi.  If however you are buying a new cable, I suggest that you opt for HDMI.

  3. Just because HDMI is only cable. Does not mean it is better.

  4. If it's an UP-conversion dvd player, then you may want to go with HDMI since upconversion will not transmit through component cables (unless there is a hack for your dvd player to allow it). If you do buy HDMI cables, check on ebay if there aren't any good deals at any stores by your home. You can get GREAT deals on cables through ebay. Hope this helps!

  5. that doesn't make any sense,  HDMI can do progressive scan too.  The difference between component and HDMI is very minimal.  So use whichever you feel like.

  6. Try both and trust your eyes. You probably won't be able to tell the difference.
