Question:

Composter = mice lure?

Will a composter outside attract vermin, such as mice or rats? I have started a compost pile and am looking into what kind of structure to build. My husband is warming up to the idea, but is concerned about the possibility of attracting undesirable creatures. We have many tiny entrances into our home where unwelcome guests could come in, if they started hanging around the yard.

Is it possible to have a composter, without attracting pests? What is the best way to prevent them from congregating around the composter?

Thanks!

  1. Mice or other rodents could find use of a compost pile to nest in if you have your pile on the ground. Consider putting down wooden pallets as a floor and place a couple mice traps underneath, or do like we did and use a barrel suspended off the ground with a frame.

    If all else fails, use fingernail polish remover..lol.
