Compressing HD Videos?

Hi,

I would like to upload my 8min documentary to Youtube and other sites but the wmv file is quite large (about 400mb). What can I do to compress it with the least amount of quality loss.

Is it even recommended to compress? All i want is to upload my movie, in HD Format but I beleive a too big file might be bothersome for some users and the loading time will be much longer.

What would you suggest?

I think Youtube is going to recompress it to 640x480 anyways. They don't have an HD channel. If you use there uploader they allow you to have 1GB and 10min videos.
