Compute the voltage of a cell in which one half-cell is the hydrogen half-cell with hydrogen at a pressure of 203 kPa and 1.00M H+. The other half-cell is Zn and Zn2+ at 1.00M. All other conditions are standard.

  1. If the cell is a voltaic one, then

    Zn(s) + 2H+(aq) ==> H2(g) + Zn2+(aq)  Eo = 0.76 V

    203 kPa x (1 atm / 101.3 kPa) = 2.00 atm

    So Q = (P H2) [Zn2+] / [H+]^2

    = (2.00)(1.00) / (1.00)^2 = 2

    E cell = Eo - 0.059/n log Q

    = 0.76 - 0.059/2 log 2

    = 0.76 - 0.01 = 0.75 V
