Does anyone know of a good dvd player for the computer that can play 5.1 surround sound?

  1. If you want 5.1 surround sound from a computer you will need a sound card that has a digital surround sound output with S/PDIF, either over electrical coaxial cable (with RCA jacks) or optical fiber (TOSLINK) to hook up to your sound system. Also you will need a media player that is capable of decoding surround sound signals.  


  2. You could use any computer DVD player since none of them decode sound. In a computer the sound decoding is done by the player application and then handed off to the sound card. A codec (encoder/decoder) is required to decode the sound and there are a few free ones available and several for sale. The 5.1 sound actually comes from the codec in your media player.
