Hi guys (:

My computer has been running slower, and my internet too, few days ago it was fine but for some reason it is lagging like crazy today!

I don't know the reason to it.. but people have suggested that my computer should be defragged?

I have never defragged my computer and how to do it.. can someone please elaborate? What is it exactly and how often should i do it? so confused ==' it does not involve the risk of losing my files right? (music, videos, docs etc.)

And whats the difference between downloading a defrag program and pressing the defrag button on the computer (or so they say..)

Thanks! Sorry for so many questions! ><"

  1. You might try this software called Tuneup utilities.it works very well. i have gotten my computer to run faster and gotten more space on my hard drive. my internet also works faster. Just use the 30 day free trial . if you don like it then remove it. but run it once

  2. Like Tofus said, defrag probably wont fix ur computer's sudden slow down... might be a virus, spyware, adware, or somthin else messin with ur computer.

but to answer ur questions, no, u wont lose any files when defragmenting. ur computer will just rearrange, move, group, etc files in the hard drive thus making it easier or faster for the pc to find it next time it need to access those files. i never heard of other third party defrag software so just use the one available in ur computer. and the time to finish defrag??? it depends on ur hard disk total size and space. but it wont take a day though, at least in my experince :)

    hope this helps! good luck

  3. If you are using windows the defrag works good. Go to MY computer, then right click your hard drive, click properties, then tools, then click on the defrag link. Defragging takes a LONG time. I only have a 120gb hard drive and after 2 hours it still wasn't done. Even if you cancel it half way through, the drive will still be half way defragged. It sped my laptop good (well at least in my games). Good luck!

  4. Well firt off check for viruses and spyware clean your computer from unwanted files and programes your not useing. Ok Defragging your computer what you do is click start , all programs , accessories , system tools , disk defragmenter once you opened disk defragmenter click defragment depending on how big your hard drive is and how many programs and files your you have on your computer it should take about 5-10 mintues to defrag your your computer. What you can do to is do a disk clean up click start , all programs , accessories , system tools , disk cleanup once you opend disk cleanup it should say files to delete click check all of them deleteing this will not delete anything on your computer except unwanted files that you delted along time ago unwanted internet files all junk trust me it wont delete anything of yours just unwanted internet files and old files you deleted before. Then you can go over to more options clean up system restore then click ok. Then you can create another restore point. You can look all this up on google to. Hope i helped.

  5. it would take a long time to defrag so i would suggest to do it at night.

  6. Not defrag your drive does NOT cause your computer to suddently slow down, your problem is something else.

Try using a good anti-virus software and anti-spyware program first.

  7. Defrag probably wont help a whole lot. But you can try. Defraging takes a while, but you dont have to do anyhting. If you have Vista its right in the control panel. If you have xp, Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter.

    I would suggest a good anti-virus program.

Avast is a pretty good one and its free http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...

Norton is also good, but its pretty expensive.

I would also try deleting your temporary files and cookies. If you use Internet Explorer its under tools i think.

Also, none of this will delete your personal files.
