Question:

Computer Emergency - caught a virus.

Hi guys. Viruses attacked my laptop this morning. A warning came up from fake AntiVirus XP 2008, letting me know that Windows had been affected with 5 spyware and viruses:

1 N-case.win32

2 CoolWebSearch(CWS).win32

3 I-Worm.sobig

4 Backdoor.sdbot.gen

5 TrojanDropper.JS.Mimail

I have McAfee on my comp, but it's not picking up any of these harmful files. Worse, these viruses are blocking all of my anti-virus software and Automatic Updates from connecting to the internet. My internet is limited. It hinders searching on Google, and I'm attacked by pop ups as soon as I open my homepage.

Tried using Ad-aware and Trend Micro's CoolWebSearch remover, but nothing has worked.

Appreciate any advice you might have!

  2. Try going to www.annoyances.org and look for keywords in your question.  I bet there aren't really any viruses except the bugger that says you have those 5, leaving you chasing phantoms.  Annoyances may have some advice obout how to remove it.

This may help a little to stop the popups so you can research it:

The NET command is used to send such messages (e.g. net send * Hello World), and the messenger service (different than Windows Messenger) allows users to receive such text messages. By default, it is running and active on all Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems. Here's how to turn it off:

    Open the Services window (services.msc).

Double-click the Messenger entry in the list.

Click Stop to close the service.

Select Disabled from the Startup type list to prevent it from loading automatically the next time Windows starts.

Close the Services window when you're done.

Once it has been disabled, you will no-longer receive such messages. Note that many firewalls also prevent this type of data from reaching your computer in the first place, but it certainly can't hurt to turn off the service anyway.

  3. there is lots of free software to take care of your problem you just  need to look around ..take your time ,.if you have vista you can check for corrupetd files ...it work for me .

  4. A very good, free anti-virus available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:

    http://www.free.grisoft.com

And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirro...

And for protecting your personal info and files, use Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition:

    http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_fr...

All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

    Hope that helps.
