I have just bought a new PC Desktop and i would like some help and detailed instructions on how to set up a wireless connection from it.

I have a Belkin USB aerial that i want to plug into my PC to pump out my internet conn, so that my girlfriend can sit in the same room as me on her wireless laptop and pick up the Internet from my PC and Belkin aerial on her lappy so she can use the web.

Is this possible ?????

Hope this is clear hahaha

Any help is much appreciated.

  1. Hi,

I have never done this before so i'm not sure, but normally if you want to do this then you need specilised drivers what will setup the wireless dongle as an access point, i don't think that belkin offer this service though.

Really the easiest way would be to go and buy a wireless router, then you can easily and painlessly setup a wireless network. But if you want a cheaper option i think that you would/should be able to use an ethernet connection in your pc and just connect a wireless access point to it.

As i said though i have never done this so not sure but i do know people who have found it difficult to setup a wireless dongle as a wireless access point.

  2. read the instruction manual

  3. Not hard to do.. called an AD-HOC network... Microsoft has a great tutorial for you.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

it takes about 15-20 minutes to setup.

Thats all you have to do.

  4. Your Belkin aerial is receiver only.

You need to have a wireless router (often modem routers have wireless as well).

  5. go here and use the setup wizard

    http://www.belkin.com/uk/wizards.html

  6. If you have a Router, she should be able to key in the number given with your router and enable her laptop to pick up the signal.

  7. you know need a wireless router which you attach to the modem, your girlfriends laptop most likely has a built wireless card receiver call wifi so she can connect to a wireless router, and what you refer to as a belkin usb aerial sounds like a wireless card receiver (similar to wifi) to connect to a wireless router

  8. i agree with thomas as i have just set one up myself

  10. You can't use your p.c as a wireless router. you need to have a wireless router connected to your modem. then you can use your  USB areal receiver to receive signals wirelessly and if your GF has a wireless reciver on her laptop modern lappy have these, then she can recive wireless internet signals too.

  11. Unless you fancy spending 3 hours programming a wireless gateway through your desktop, the only way your girlfriend can access wireless is if you buy a wireless router. You can get a short-range one for about £20 these days.
