I want to be one or the other, but don't know what to be. I must choose between a Computer Engineering major or Computer Science major.

  1. Computer Science deals  with the sciences of computing- and not engineering

Computer engineering deals with the learning of architectures of  digital systems (both hardware and software)

That being said, Computer engineers get the best of both the worlds. They learn computing science as well as engineering  and are usually experts in hardware-software co-design. They have the flexibility to enter into either domains. Most of the schools usually do not have a distinct computer engineering department. It is merged with Electrical Engineering  and commonly termed as Electrical and Computer Engineering. This encourages students  towards opting for electrical engineering electives rather than computer science electives- but you can always choose computer science electives.

Salary wise both the programs offer you similar base pays. But computer science students get a big leap once they have few years of experience.

In the end it  really depends on what you enjoy.

  2. Depends on whether you prefer writing code or working on circuits.

  3. Choose computer science, it pays better and there will always be a need for many programmers.  For every project I work on we need at least 4x as many programmers for about twice the amount of time as computer engineers.
