  1. hi you may already have a router if your being asked to enter a network key, checkout below it's explains how to access your router and change the key if you have no idea what it is

  2. the key you are referring to is most likely the WEP key from your router.

From your desktop you need to log into your router.  Now depending on what brand you have will decide what the address is.

Here is an easy way to find the address

From the run command type cmd and hit enter

from the c: prompt type Ipconfig

look for the address of the gateway.  it will be the last set of numbers.  it will look something like 192.168.1.1

type those numbers with the periods into your web browser.

You are now logged into your router.  Now find the wireless security tab, it may take some time to click through all of them tabs until you find the web wireless security.  There you will see 4 lines of letters and numbers, those are the keys you can use to connect wirelessly.

Hope that helps, if not im me and I will offer you some more help

  3. Modem takes internet connection from the provider to you.

Router takes the connection from the modem and allows multiple computers to use it at the same time.

Router can, in addition to having ports for ethernet cables, create a wireless network.  This is what you want for your laptop.  Your desktop can continue to run with a cable plugged into the router.

So, you need a wireless router.  Some modems are a combination of modem/router, but I would guess that's not what you have.  You could always check with your provider or repost with the make/model of the modem.

Once you get the router, it will have instructions for setup.  You choose the name of your network, and a key or passphrase to restrict the access.  That's the "key" you'll need when you connect your laptop to this wireless network.

  4. Your modem has no wireless. You need to buy a wireless router and connect this to your line. You then connect all your machines to the router. If you do not have a Linksys wireless router yourself, your connection must be to somebody else's wireless and could get you up to 5 years prison., as this is considered stealing from the owner of the system AND their ISP.

  5. Most notebooks detect wireless networks automatically (explore the internet tools your browser has).  Add one using internet tools, it's one of the choices given there. Network key or encryption key, if it's a wireless connection, may be the no. below the serial no. on the sticker on the back of your router/modem (this is usually the default, if you didn't personally set-up your account),  The password, however, if you didn't personally set-up your connection, could be anything. Call your provider to personally reset the password to something you'll remember. Then go to internet tools again, and add a wireless connection using your key code and password.
