Computer Picking up phone

So my moms has an older computer and she has dial up. Well it used to be fine hooked up to the phone line then one day it started to answer the phone sorta. If you call her and the line is plugged into the computer (which is off) Then it rings once and all you here is static. This happened with both a direct line to the wall and though the phone. She has windows 98 and it is an older model dell. Is there anyway I can help her fix this so she can leave it plugged in. Now she just unhooks it after she gets done. It never used to do this and now it does I could not figure out why. Help please

  1. It sounds like the modem is in auto-answer mode. The static noise is the sound a modem or fax machine makes so that the modem or fax on the other side of the line knows what speed to connect (300 baud, 1200 baud,  2400 baud, 9600, etc.)

    Put this code

    AT S0=0

in the initialization string of your modem configuration. This code tells it to turn auto-answer off.

    Good luck
