Question:

Computer Problem - Is It Serious?

Last night at 12 midnight my computer, a Dell XP, around 8 years old, started doing something funny. The disk drive won't stay in, it keeps coming in and out. I'm not pressing the button either, it does this on its own. I turned my computer off, thinking that that was the problem, it's still happening! How can I get it to stop this and is this serious?

  1. a 8  year old Dell computer is not viable for repair as they use custom parts.

the only standard parts on a dell pc are the hard drive, cd drive and the memory, if one of these is the problem you can replace them otherwise

8 years for a computer is pretty good probably time for a new one

  2. If it's a desktop, you can remove the drive and replace it. It sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive. So replacing it is the cheapest way to do things. Here is a step by step and a video on how to do it. You can get a new DVD-RW drive at Walmart. Another cheap fix might be to go to the device manager and un-install the DVD drive by expanding the DVD/CD-Drive section and then right clicking on the drive and then select "un-install" to un-install the drive. Then restart the computer to reload the drivers for the DVD drive. Wait to see all the "balloon" messages go away before trying the drive out. If this doesn't work then a new drive is needed.

  3. It's very serious! The only solution is to throw it in the nearest dumpster and buy a MAC!
