My computer is telling me my chassis fan is running to slow, how do I fix this without dragging it to the geek-squad, I want to try and do it myself if I can before having to pay anyone.

Its a 2006 Sony Viao w/ Windows XP I don't know how much more info you would need to answer, I am sure I know where it is but ah' how to fix it ..

Thanks in advance.

  1. I had this problem at one time.  Change your case fan to a better one.  You may want to checkout my store www.3btech.net or office depot or even wal-mart.

  2. your computer is telling you that it is to hot use it on a table not your lap ok mate

  3. Can try going into bios and turn off any fan monitoring you may have on. If the fan isn't caked with dust you can simply replace it. Most case fans are 80mm. About $5 at a computer store. If your fan is in front of case you will probably have to remove the front panel to get at the screws for the fan. That will consist of taking both side panels off. In front of case there will be 2-3 locking tabs and/or 2-3 screws on each side that you can access at inside front of case on each side.

Some front panels come off easy and some not so easy. There will be, of course, wires hooked up to front panel. Dont just yank the panel off but be careful. All you need to do is get access to the screws for the fan so you don't have to pull the panel out too far. I usually just sit the tower on a table. Need to pull the front panel straight forward to clear the ROM and floppy drives. I then just sit the panel on table leaning against a front corner of the case, swap the fan, then put the panel back on. You could be lucky and have a case that has 2 locking tabs holding the fan in place where you can pull the fan by just taking the left panel off. If you dont want to do it yourself I'd call around and find a computer tech to quote you a price to come out and replace the fan.

Even coming to your home and replacing the fan without you having to unplug everything and taking it to Best Buy they will probably charge you less than the Geek Squad.

  4. It probably just needs to be cleaned. The weight of the dirt/dust/pet hair on the blades is slowing it down thus causing it to run hotter. The BIOS shows the fans RPM and has a limit set to give you a warning if it drops below a certain number. Just open up the side and blow out all the junk on the fan blades and the heatsink it is attached to with a can of air (I use an air compressor) that has accumulated over the last 2 years which should be done on a regular basis to avoid this problem. You can also put a drop of 3 in 1 oil in the hole underneath the label/sticker. If that doesn't fix it then installing a new fan would solve it.
