DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT just waste my time and say its a virus or screwed up some how.

I have a dell inspiron 1520 notebook with webroot antivirus installed. after maybe two weeks of up time i restarted it and have continuously gotten a blue screen saying its missing "win32k.dll" i think.

ive also tried to go to my c: and it says it cannot find it in free dos. windows boot disk repair doesnt do anything helpful for it and the diagnostics and checks on the setup or boot menus dont help.

when starting up gives several options how to start up and each time i get the same blue screen with each option. havent been able to log on or even get to that screen.

i know i can pay someone else blah blah blah but wanna do it here and was just curious if anyone might know why it is doing that or how i could fix it?

thanks!

  1. If, in fact, you're getting a win32k.dll stop error, not a missing fileneame error, this sounds like a hardware problem.  Can't tell what specifically since you didn't bother posting the message or codes.

If you are using a dos disk to try to repair it won't work since dos doesn't recognize the ntfs system.  Hence the not finding c:

Possibly a heat issue?  Have you added new hardware or drivers lately?  Have you flashed the bios?  Do you overclock the cpu?

Or maybe you have two operating systems and it's gotten confused between the two?

You wanted some ideas.  That's what I've got.  It's a pretty techie thing to debug.

    hope this helps.

  3. Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This  problem can be solved by uninstalling new software, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info

  4. Probably a bad or damaged hard drive. Sectors might be toasted or something.
