Question:

Computer comparisions: processor, memory, HD. Need help?

I'm deciding between two computers. They are both in links here, and I don't quite understand why one is $100 more than the other, and if that extra $100 is worth it. Also, I don't know how AMD Athlon compares to Intel dual core processors. Specs are just below, and links are far below. Any insight (and recommendations even) would be helpful.

Comp 1:

AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 4450B 2.3GHZ processor

3GB DDR2 Memory

250 GB SATA II HD space

Comp 2:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 2.0GHZ

3 GB DDR2

500 GB HD space

The HD space alone isn't enough to warrant it, as I don't even need 250.

  1. Personally I would chose the AMD system. First, they are more econmical. Second, It has a faster processor. Third, I think they are better systems than Intel, Intel just got on the band wagon first and has the big name, kinda like Microsoft.

  2. Yes, the extra 250GB's of harddrive space bumps the price up a bit. The main reason the AMD model is cheaper, is that AMD hardware components are cheaper in PRICE, in comparison to Intel. AMD has been trying to catch up to Intel, and has had some monetary issues lately. What's the best way of selling parts? Sell them cheaper than the competitor. This in NO way means the quality of AMD is any less than Intel. You go down, and buy gas. Which gas station do you buy from.

Generally, people tend to buy from the one with the cheaper price of gas.

The gasoline is good stuff at both stations.

At one time, (Not long ago), AMD was kicking the c**p out of Intel, as far as processor performance was concerned. I suspect they'll do it again.

I'm an Intel processor user myself, but have a 'soft spot' for AMD's.

Why do I lean more towards Intel? Why do I drive a Corvette? It's just personal preference.

As far as the reliability statement stated above. BULL! I repair computers, and build gamer computers,(After work, and on week-ends. I have a shop with a coupla' tech's also. Long story)

I have about twenty computers sittin' around here with AMD cpu's from AthlonXP's made in 2001, (to AMD's that fit an AM2, or AM2+ socket.) They still perform as well as they did in 2001! I have older AMD's also! How about THAT for reliability?

  3. Depends what you want the computer for...the reason for one being more expensive is the HD (a 250 GB difference). If you want the computer for space (music, storing things etc) go for the 2nd one. If you want the computer for a bit more speed (not internet, i mean games, open files etc) then go for the 1st. They both seem very decent computers. Oh and also i find Intel Pentium more reliable than AMD Athlon.

    Hope this helped

  4. In general Intel processors are expensive than AMD processors, about the functionality I think there is no big different. It is just the problem of brand. just read in details at http://www.diffen.com/difference/AMD_vs_...

  5. i perfer amd computers, but thats my choice, my friend and i both built computers at the same time, and he built an intel comp, that has died on him 2 already, this has been in a year time frame. the advantage of amd is you can overclock it which will give your cpu more speed, just make sure u have the proper cooling product. but its up to you the intel has more memory, but the amd is faster.
