C drive - free space 101GB used 39.5GB

Previous Q i asked suggested i download CCleaner - pants!

MacAffee does the same job.

Why am i suddenly SOOOOOO SLOW?

When i go to tools on my Explorer toolbar under "Manage Ad-Ons" i have shed loads of Java , active X enabled - is this my root cause of being so slow.

Gets to the point where explorer just LOCKS UP

Help!!!!

  1. 512meg of RAM is most likely the problem. 512meg is the *minimum* system requirement for Vista Home, any other flavour of Vista requires a minimum of 1 gig.

Treat your PC to a RAM upgrade.... you'll see the difference :)

    HTH

  2. If I we you I'd set a time maybe once a week/month to defrag and download ccleaner to because its really good , and free and the same people have a free good defragger out as well called deffragler

  3. I find MCAFEE often slows things down. Also you may find that Vista is using up to much memory perhaps your laptop would be better of with xp. Also make your you haven't got a virus be scanning your computer every 5 - 7 days

  4. Have you tried using Firefox? Maybe that will work better than Explorer, it's certainly faster running on my computer than IE so it could be worth a try it's free after all...

  5. first prob. is vista , second is mcafee, im not im not in the mood to tell you what you should do ..

  6. 1) Use another browser like Firefox or Opera.

    OR

    2) Disable all of your Internet explorer add on's and then restart internet explorer to see if its any faster loading. If it is faster then you will have to uninstall all the java programs on your computer. Make sure all the add on's you have are needed and not just running for no reason!

  7. Scan your computer for malware with Mcafee, if it's not that, I'd say it's your RAM, 512MB of RAM is no where near good enough for a processor as fast as yours, I'd upgrade to 2GB of RAM if your motherboard will support it, go to http://crucial.com and run the online scan to determine what RAM is compatible with your PC, how much RAM your computer can support, and the price range.

If you don't really want to do that you could try using another browser, I'd say Firefox is a lot faster than Internet Explorer (I think your using Internet Explorer at the moment).

    Firefox download site - http://mozilla.org/firefox

    Good luck!

EDIT: 512MB of RAM is no where near enough to run Vista!!! You'll need at least 1GB to actually run it properly! I can't belive you only have 512MB! You really need to get some more RAM!

  8. I would first suggest using the Internet instead

  9. to increase ram~

if you have a USB memory stick or buy 1(if in uk argos have them at £5.99 for 1GB~£7.99 for2GB)

plug in the stick ~vista will give you the option to use it as extra ram.

the extra ram will speed things up for you

  10. macfee and vista S.......s.  Try installing xp and avg, they are excellent and proven operating and antimalware programs

  11. Have you tried switching off your phishing filter? It made mine faster.

    Good Luck

  12. ADD MORE RAM...

  13. It could well be a virus taking you down.  You need to pull in a few more virus and spyware controls..

You do realize that some spyware puts up false windows, and you could be setting on the false window, while someone else is using your computer.  Second, if you have limewire or any other download music program, you must make sure it is cut off and not sharing, look for the little green flower on the bottom right hand corner if your desktop, and click it off.  Now, I will list the locations for new virus and spyware, free downloads.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com

    Download,  AVG and SPYBOT

    http://www.commodo.com

They offer virus control and firewalls....

Yes, you could have too many Internet explorer controls active, go to  internet options, then to programs , bottom you will find add-ons  you either allow or disallow individual controls.  Good luck, hope it helps.

  14. vista i believe requires atleast 1 gb of ram and suggest 2 gb.. and what you have running in the backround is key too. check your start up menu. and in your task tray (close everything out you can). mcfee is prolly running and sopping up some... along with what else you have running. active x and java you need so don't worry bout that. but what ever your also running when you go online to some of those sites is fighting you for speed and ram. mozilla is chill and if everything else is closed and not running and you've deleted your cookies then you just need the additional ram, which is recommended, good luck

  15. Whoa hang on. Ccleaner is not the same as MacAffee. I downloaded it and *bam!* cleaned up over 500MB of c**p the first time. Then I ran the registry cleaner then defraged my c drive and used Adaware and bingo. As fast as it was when new. Also be sure to check for updates on your cleaners/virus scanner etc. like every 2-3 days. Please note also that Myspace (if you surf there) is bogged down and loaded with malware. Even though people tell you it's safe, "yea ok.".. Those are the same jokers whining cause their 'puters super-slow.

  16. sounds like you need to clean up your  pc.

by cleaning out all the hidden stuff that stays on you computer you can speed it up

here is a link to my free computer help site

    http://www.freecomputeradvice.org/speed-...

this page shows you how to speed up your computer

run through the tutorials one at a time in order..

this should help speed up your computer..

BUT 512 of RAM on a VISTA pc is NOT ENOUGH

windows vista need at least 2gig to run correctly

you may wish to invest in more RAM its not very expensive these days.

i would recommend a matched pair of 1 gig sticks = 2 gig.
