  1. You need to enable WEP or WPA security for your wireless network oe else anyone in the neighborhood can steal your wireless signal & surf for free.

See your router's documentation on how to setup wireless security.

  2. oz is on the mark, but personally i wouldnt bother

the wireless router is only good for half a house and if you want other householders or a visitor to use the internet then it be a pain.

however if you only want yourself to use it then perhaps set up the encryption.

    here some info for you

    Set up Home network

    ===============

If you cannot find these locations search for them in windows help files

    Click start >help and support.

Wire in all computers and network printer to the router using cat 5 cable from their Ethernet ports.  Cat 5 is faster than wifi.  Use blue or white cat 5 leads, do not use any leads that have red on them.

If you buy your router from your ISP there is a good chance they will set it up for you. Check your ISP website for contact number.

Your ISP has to connect the router to the internet.

    Then on each computer:

    1. Open My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View Tab >tick “use simple file sharing”

    2. In My computer Right click the Hard Drive that you want to share >sharing and search  > tick share the folder in network

    3. On desktop screen select the my computer icon and right click the icon >properties >computer name tab > Change> bullet workgroup and type in WORKGROUP

    4. In control panel category view >network and internet connections

    a. select network connections  > Find the LAN connection Icon >right click >enable

    b. Find the Windows Firewall pop up (located in the LAN icon properties) >bullet Off ( disable any other firewall programs)

    c. Find the LAN connection icon  >right click  >repair

    d. In LAN connection properties pop up > Tick the four items in the main window > in properties screen for Internet Protocol >general tab >bullet two auto instructions

    5. Using Explorer, expand My Network Places in the directory tree >select Workgroup > click on workgroup and what you can see in the results.  This is your home network., you should see each computer that is in the Workgroup domain.

    6. You can plug a network printer in the router and load the network printer drivers into each computer and each computer can access the same printer.

    7. If you have a sensitive part of a computer that you do not want to share on the network, right click and un tick the sharing..  This can be the Hard drive, partition, folder or file.

    8. You do not have to have sharing enabled on your computer to see others, you need sharing on Your computer enabled so others can see you.

    9. After all computers are turned on and running, enable the firewall program you use on each computer.

    10. Each computer will require their own antivirus and internet security programs.

    11. Using the internet browser access the router (see router instructions) by typing in the IP address in the browser go bar.

dont worry about neighbours etc un;ess your router is on the boundary

  3. Open internet explorer and type in this number 192.168.0.1 in the address bar  That is the default address for a D-Link router.Do this from one of the wired computers. A password interface will appear. The default username is" admin ' and leave the password blank. A interface page will come up that looks like a web page but its the setup interface in the router. Click on "wireless" Enable WEP. Click on apply when you do that 4 sets of 25 numbers  (numbers and letters) will be in the interface. Write down one of the sets. That is the WEP key you will need to set up the wireless computer. The wired ones wont need it. You can also set a password while you are in the setup interface. Be sure to write your new password and username down somewhere. When you try to connect the wireless computer to the internet it will ask for the WEP key you just wrote down. Put it in and click apply  It will just connect next time you start it.

I told you the wrong amont of numbers in the WEP key . Its 10 numbers with colons seperating them : if memory serves me. Anyway you will see 4 sets of numbers use 1 set of them
