Ok, I went to report a spammer about 15 minutes ago, and I accidentally clicked on their link ( I know quiet dumb), anyway, I did not notice that I accidentally clicked on it right away, and then all of a sudden it popped up saying install codec, or plugin, or something like that. At that point I still did not know I clicked on the link, but I clicked no, and it would say not installed and keep harassing, until I finally decided to close firefox manually, since there was no other way around it, so when I opened it back up, the pop up never reappeared. I know the pop up wanted me to install a load of spyware and garbage (and it likely already tried), and since I use Xubuntu, I know it did not do anything since it was designed for windows. It never did ask for the root password.

But my question is, could it have somehow damaged firefox, or could it be doing something to firefox that I do not know about?

  1. Installing a codec simply enables various items that can be on webpages.

Did you damage firefox - no. You might have installed a codec, but you need codecs to see youtube videos and other such stuff.

You worry too much. It is good that you evidently know more than the posters telling you to install xyz.
