Computer internet connection help!?

Ok, im trying to install a Netgear wireless router and failing.

I e-mailed tech support at Netgear and they replied asking for some information.

- What is the make and model of the modem?

- Can you log into the router?

- Are you getting an IP address from the router?

- What is the IP address on the computer?

- What is detected by the router setup wizard?

- What is the WAN (internet) port IP address in router status of the router settings?

Those are teh questions asked.

I know what model the modem is but thats about it.

I posted in another websites forum and got these instructions:

Save these instructions, and remember that the modem always plugs into the "internet" labeled space on the router.

In your start/globe menu, go to the "run" command. If you're on vista, you'd use the little white box near the bottom. Type in "CMD" and press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.

Then type "ipconfig" and press enter. It'll list a series of four numbers as your "default gateway". Write those down.

Go to some internet browser, and type that series of numbers (something like 192.168.x.x) into the address bar like you were going to a website.

A login box should come up. The username should be "admin", and the password can be anything from "admin" to "pass" to "password" or "password1", or even blank. That'll get you into your modem's settings. Perhaps 192.168.(1 or 0).254 or something like that.

In your connection settings in your modem, there will be a username and password. Write them down. Then change the connection type from PPPoE to "bridge ethernet". That will tell the modem that your router will be taking care of the connection from now on. Save the settings, wait for the modem to reset if it needs to.

Then... disconnect your modem from your computer, and connect the router to the computer, and the modem into the router.

In your start/globe menu (again), go to the "run" command (again). If you're on vista, you'd use the little white box near the bottom. Type in "CMD" and press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.

In the black box that comes up, "ipconfig /release" or "ipconfig /release all", and then "ipconfig /renew", or "ipconfig /renew all". That'll make your computer be forced into recognizing that some new form of internet is plugged in.

Then type "ipconfig" and press enter. It'll list a series of four numbers as your "default gateway". Write those down.

Go to some internet browser, and type that series of numbers (something like 192.168.x.x) into the address bar like you were going to a website.

A login box should come up. The username should be "admin" or blank, and the password can be anything from "admin" to "pass" to "password" or "password1", or even blank. That's how you get into the router's settings this time.

There should be a page where you cna change the connection settings.

In the connection settings, set it to PPPoE, give it the username and password, and save the settings.

Then there might be a "status" page where you can tell it to connect (after you save the connection settings on the connection settings page).

However, it may not connect if the modem doesn't realize it's plugged into something new... so unplug the modem's power, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in, wait a minute, then see if your router connects.

___________

I typed the gateway into the browser but i coudlnt find the "connection settings" or where im supposed to change from PPPoE to Bridge... am i supposed to type it somewhere?

My ISP is TPG and the modem brand is Dynalink.

Thanks!

  1. Netgear. Very easy to use. I can answer but please shorten it out. I can fix it for a small fee also.

Are you asking how to get internet connection through your router?
