Computer network help!!!!!

Question

I am trying to get my home network up and going to play a multiplayer game.

I have an ethernet cable connected between 2 laptop computers and have been able to swap files on the share folder.

I am trying to play command and conquer but I have been unable to get either computer to join a game.

I get a message of "timed out" or "serial in use".

I been messing around for 2 hours now trying to get to the point to play a game with 2 people.
