None of my USB ports will use the things that i plug in, like my ipod and my other mp3 player. I'm getting really pissed at this and at the amount of people just advertising for a free ipod

  1. There are two things that are required for USB ports to function.  The first is:  If this is an XP platform, you must have service pack two loaded.  The second is:  The USB driver for your motherboard must be loaded.

To check the driver, just open the "Device Manager" and check for a "yellow" exclamation or question mark.  The first indicated that the driver is loaded but it is not functioning correctly.  The second or question mark indicates that the driver is not loaded.

    Hope this help a bit.

  2. I had an HP computer that had a faulty USB chip that exhibited the same problem. If nothing works when you plug it in there are two main areas of failure with respect to the computer. The hardware that controls the usb, and the drivers that interface the hardware to the OS.

Try reinstalling the drivers for the USB in your OS. If that doesn't fix it you may need to look into having the motherboard tested.

Does the computer even recognize when the iPod is plugged in?

Right click on My Computer->Properties->Choose the Hardware tab->Click on the Device Manager button.

Then plug in your iPod and see if it is seen in the Device Manager. If it is recognized it will say Apple iPod, if not you may see Unknown Device.

Your in really bad shape if you don't see anything added when you plug it in.
