  1. Camera has a lot greater value than a laptop.

Think of it this way -> Memories are priceless, and computers depreciate fast.

Think about, what would happen if someone in your immediate family passed away and you had a nice car or a laptop....no videos or photos of that person.....

Also, the Sony HDR-SR12 is complete garbage. You do not want a hard drive camcorder, and if possible, stay away from sony.

    Why?

Sony made sever light capture devices with cheap glue which spurred a class action suit by manufacturers that bought their circuitry, and it was ruled that sony should extend warranties 7-8 years to replace any device that had its image sensor stop working......

Having taken apart a PS1, PS2 and a PS3, I can tell you firsthand, that they are very poorly made inside out of extremely cheap plastic.

Hard Drive camcorders, or DVD camcorders have to use very high compression on-the-fly which will produce very low quality video very quickly. Seriously, there is not much processing power in there. You only get good quality out of such only if they cost $5000, because they record to very special memory cards.

You will also need a computer to purge the camera.

The Canon HV30 is around ~$750 and it record very high quality high definition video to MiniDV tapes. Each tape store 10 gb high quality, DV\HDV video, and they are around $5 a piece or less if you buy in bulk.

This camera has also won several awards and its image quality is close to that of my Panasonic AG-HVX200k.

You can keep the videos on tapes until you save up for a laptop.

  2. You can get both, a laptop for $500 and a video camera for $300.
