Computer problem, Spools.exe prevents me from installing any anti virus software. What can I do?

Well my neighbor's computer is so ****ed up that he can't even get on the internet or even install anti virus software from CD's. I've tried using safe mode to install Kaspersky 6.0 but to no avail. Same results with a system restore. Spools.exe pops up every time I try to open kaspersky from the CD, and if by some chance kaspersky does get far enough where it shows up, clicking install does nothing and I can't kill it.

Im sure there are many other viruses other than the spools.exe problem but I just need to be able to install avast or kaspersky and I can fix it from there. This whole problem is mainly due to misuse of limewire and not taking precautions on what he downloaded. I've advised him to use firefox from now on rather than internet explorer, because its safer.

My two main questions is how can I get spools.exe permanently removed manually so I can install Kaspersky

Or if that fails afterwards and there is another virus blocking it, does avast require the internet to be installed because I was thinking of downloading it, putting it on a flash drive and trying to install it that way.

  1. go to "task manager"

view a list of all processes

if "spools.exe" is one of them, then right click it and click "end process"

also, you will be able to view the file location with "task manager"

if you're unable to uninstall the virus in "program files" then go to the location of "spools.exe" specified in "task manager" and manually delete it.

if you cannot find a folder specified, then go to control panel/folder options/view (tab) and click "show hidden files and folders"

be careful not to change anything other than "spools.exe" in the hidden folders.

when you are done, change it back to "do not show hidden files and folders"

I misused limewire as well so i have some experience in these matters

i had (at one point) almost 50 different viruses running on my system which were unrecognized by my Norton Antivirus program.

i went to "task manager" and checked which processes had been using unusially large amount of RAM and got rid of everything.

    WARNING!

you've got to be careful with these matters as you can inadvertedly delete a crucial system file instead!
