Question:

Computer problem - can anyone help?

HP laptop seems to have completely frozen.

Last night my friend was surfing and clicked on a link that he probably shouldn't have done (yep, to do with p**n!) then found that he couldn't switch it off.

This morning, the laptop comes on when the power switch is pressed but has an icon on the bottom bar saying "45 internet explorer"- nothing happens when you click on it, and if you click on any of the other icons nothing happens.

You can also only switch the laptop off by pressing the power switch (which sends it into hibernation) the off/restart/log off icons do not work.

I think it may be a virus. Does anyone know what can be done?

Thanks

  1. System Restore,..it works a treat for me when i'm in a pickle! ;)

  2. first try to press CRT+ALT+DEL keys to open Task Manager, find the 45... on the list of opened files and press "end task". It should unfreeze your desktop, if it's a virus it will change to other stupid things, then u will know it's a virus, in control panel press Power Options icon and then Hibernate, turn it off and disconnect internet lead, then restart and your compute should be easier to handle then start fighting with the virus. Or just unplug the charger power lead and remove the battery then disconnect the internet lead and start computer fighting with virus. When u keep the internet on it will disturbe u a lot to do anything with your computer

Restore doesn't always help if there is virus it only restore the system but not the whole disk

  3. Hi there, yeah sounds quite bad. Your hp system may have its own restore thing built into it that you can activate on startup but it will format the entire system and make it in a "as new" condition. So it will fix the problem but will delete all your files etc. Your hp may not have something like this but i know my dell does. Look on google to see if it does.

Or you will have to put in your windows xp(or other operating system) install disk, tell it to format the hard drive and then re install the operating system totally. this will also delete your files.

And thats all i can suggest if you cant actually get onto the pc

    good luck!

  4. Tell your friend, that watching p**n can be dangerous.

I have nothing against it, when you can do it safely.

When he wants to watch porno in a safe way. let him go to\

    http://www.pornhub.com/

Stay away from the right site, just go to : video

  5. If your laptop only goes into Hibernate when you push the off button, switch off at the mains and take out the battery,if you are running with one (That's the instructions that come with mine) Leave it for a few minutes and then set up and start again. Also,by pressing Ctrl,Alt and Delete.all at the same time you can switch off anything that's running in Task Manager.

  6. to turn off, hold button for 5 long seconds.

it probably is a virus and you should scan the computer to delete it.

  7. you need Firefox!! Firefox is more secure, faster and more stable than any other browsers. The link below references a article which simply tells you how to make firefox 10 times faster than any other browser http://imperviouscomputer.com/

  8. HI...

Try system restore... that might help... :)

  9. You will have to put your O.S. installer disk in and pull the battery for a full 5 minutes.

Put it back in, power up and go in like you are trying to install a fresh copy of Windows.

When it finds your old copy and asks if you want to continue or offers the hit "r" to repair, do the repair.

It will clean your old copy out and replace it without affecting your personal files and it should fix your problem.

If not, you will have to do an actual reinstall.

  10. hmmm.... yeah I think its a virus... It could have done something to the system, so it's malfunctioning...try to re-format it...but, made some back-up first...

if that doesn't work... contact your nearest technician... they'll know what to do...

  11. my Dear, is a virus so the bedt thing to do now is to format and do a clean installation. do it before it damage your harddrive....

  14. start the system in safe mode(by pressing F8 key at starting). scan with a antivir like avg free or avira. than disable any suspecious stastup entery from msconfig. if nothing happens than reinstall the copy of windows by formatting the c: drive

  15. You can restore it, by running your computer in save mode.

To start your computer in save mode:

    - Just turn the computer on.

    - Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

    - Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.

    - Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Goto -- Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Select the last second restore point, and follow the screen instructions.

If this will not work just format you System :)

  16. It certainly is a virus. So before doing a system restore, let's just try to resolve the problem :

    1) First of all, try booting your laptop in safe mode. Do you still have the same problem ? If so, move to (2), if not : this is great. Now, do you have any anti-virus ? If so, run it and move to (3), if not : download a free one from internet (Avira Antivir Free Edition will do well), install it, run it and move to (3).

    2) The problem persists even in safe mode. Can you access to your anti-virus or at least download a free one from internet ? If so : Do it and move to (3), if not : do a system restore.

    3) Ok you've run an anti-virus. Did it find a virus and fixed it ? If so, your problem is solved and you can reboot your computer normally, if not : do a system restore.

    4) System restore : Here is a way to do a system restore with you XP CD-Rom : http://www.icompute.info/System_restore_...

Hope that will help you :)

PS : I adviced a system restore in case the anti-virus didn't find anything because i don't exactly know your computing skills level. If you're familiar with computers and stuff then we could try some advanced solutions, otherwise stick with the system restore.

  17. Get your friend to pay for it to be professionally repaired. Then tell him to get on amazon and buy some lovely x*x dvd's instead of fapping over thumbnails on someone elses laptop :P

  18. have you tried holding the power button in , for about 5- 10 secs and switching power completly off and rebooting???
