Question:

Computer programs to help adapt complex text?

I'm looking for a computer program that would help me adapt complex text for students with learning disabilities. Very often the need exists to take the text to a lower grade level. Word sometimes fills in to do this using the synonyms, but I'd really like to know if there was a program out there specifically designed for this. Anyone know of one?

  1. There are some books, illustrated classics, that are the same story as the classics but with easier words.  They also seem to condense the chapter and make it somewhat shorter, without all the details.

There are a couple of reading pens where the child can scan a word with the pen and the pen will read it to them.  I believe it even provides a definition for the work, too.

Recorded Books has some books on tape at different speeds so you can slow it down for slower readers.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but other than scanning in text and then going in and changing the words, I don't know of any software that helps change text, so I hope these other resources might help a little.
