Question:

Computer restarts, crashes, slows down, hangs. Diagnosis?

Hi there.

My computer, which is about six months old, started to restart itself randomly pretty much from day one. It seemed to happen only when I used something like Call of Duty 4. Not being able to replicate the problem consistently I didn't try to get it fixed under warranty. And it wasn't that bad.

Now recently it has been slowing down from time to time, crashing even with only Firefox and CuteFTP open, for example.

And just now it crashed in the middle of a DVD and failed to start up properly time and time again. I got to a screen which seemed to be "checking the consistency" of my disks, during which process it decided to restart itself a few times.

Finally it has started properly and although a little slower than usual, seems to be working ok.

Given that history, what would you say is going on?

Many thanks.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU

  1. There could be a lot of possibilities with your computer.   It could be some type of virus.   There could be a hardware conflict in the computer.   Or your hard drive could be going or some other hardware component (RAM)

Do you remember installing any additional hardware on the computer or software?

I would recommend putting the computer into safe mode (hit f8 on reboot when the computer is loading) then try running a virus scan.  Safe mode only runs the necessary files, so if it is a problem with a corrupt file, then you will notice.   If it still restarts on you and acts weird, it could be a virus or hardware problem.  Hopefully its under warranty for you.
