My 2004 compaq logs off windows and powers down on its own then tries to start back up repeatedly. I've tried replacing the powers supply and a complete tear down and cleaning of all components nothing works. The computer works fine for about 15 minutes then logs off windows and powers down just to try and start backup again over and over. Its about made me pull my hair out
I'm having the same problem with my Compaq Presario S4000V desktop as of about 30 minutes ago. The only thing I have done so far is to unplug the power cord so that the cycling would stop. (I'm writing this on my laptop). The OS is Windows XP, no new software or hardware, the powerup/powerdown cycling is a matter of 3-4 seconds( and it will not stay on), and Norton Internet Security is the installed antivirus software. My first assumption was that this was an overheating problem, since it is over 90 degrees outside and we have no air conditioning. However, it has been this hot many times in the past 5 years since we got the computer and the computer has never shut itself off and started tis cycling pattern before. The next thing I was going to try was cleaning out everything (last done about 4 months ago -- sort of necessary on a semiregular basis in a house with no central heat and air but with pets). Since it won't power all the way up without shutting itself off again, I can't start in safe mode (or any other mode, for that matter).
