I have a friend who is dyslexic, and wants to go back to high school to get their GED. They really want to learn to read, and asked me if I could help them find computer software that will help them. Any ideas?

  1. You could start with the following websites, each dyslexic is different so a program that may help one person might not be suitable for another.

    Good luck

  2. I don't know of a specific program that helps you learn to read. My son who is dyslexic uses audio books and Dragon Dictate (a speech recognition program) for writing. check out http://www.dyslexia-adults.com/ is a good resource for dyslexia information. I don't know if you are in the US, but you can also check out http://www.rfbd.org/index.htm which is specific audio books that are searchable (textbooks etc.)

  3. I have found that the Kurzweil Software has many features that seems to be very appealing to my daughter in helping her to pronouce, define, and even read aloud, that is text to speech.  It also helps her in spelling the words that she writes correctly.  She enjoys this independent way of study and it does not make her feel that she is not capable of learning when she is very capable.  The only difference is that she sees  things differently and also learns things a little bit differently  than others.  She is "labeled" as 'SLD' but at least we have a diagnosis and a program in place that is working and her self confidence is much better than it was a year ago.
