  1. I personally think that Avira AntiVir Personal. It find it great. I am against Nortan because it was very annoying on my computer. The scan comes up at random times and it can drive you crazy.

  2. No anti-virus software is 100% effective. The effectiveness reviews vary for different modes of testing so different reviews will favour different anti-virus software. AVG is as good as any other free antivirus on average. You need to combine antivirus software with diligence.

The best form of protection is to be careful what you download and where you go on the internet.

Stay away from sites that offer pirate music/movies, especially if they require you to download any software and make sure you take care to protect your email address.

  3. AVG does have a low detection rate. Try Avira which is 100% free.

    1. AVG Free

    a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)

    b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses

    Cons: low virus detection

    2. Avast!

    a. Real-time protection

    b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

    c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

    3. Avira AntiVir

    a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

    b. It's cute umbrella icon

    c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

    Cons: A very sluggish update

I advise against Norton anti-virus, it's bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).

  4. I use AVG 8.0 Internet Security, which includes a real-time anti-virus and many other programmes relating to internet protection.

I bought the package after asking a number of computer shops what was their most popular selling software for internet protection and they all said this package.

I find it easy to use, updates are quick to download and it seems to work very well.

  5. AVG should work

make sure you have the right version

    http://free.avg.com

i use it and have no virus's

  6. Are you sure it was a virus and not a malicious codec that AV's will not remove?

I use Avast with no problems, having given up on AVG as it is too big, bloated, antispyware and antirootkit disabled in free version.

Avast config and scan tutorial, bear in mind this DOES use realtime monitoring too:
