My computer is a dell dimension 8250. I recently formatted my computer due to a virus and started to install all of its software again. I soon found out I was missing an ethernet controller, so I went on intel's website and downloaded a recommended controller. My computer accepted the controller but it cant renew IP. I typed ipconfig/all and it came back with "Windows IP config

Host Name: irrelevant

Primary DNS Suffix: Blank

Node type: Unknown

IP Routing enabled: No

WINS proxy enabled: No

Ethernet adaptor LAC

Connection-specific DNS Suffix description:Intel Pro/100 M network connection.

Physical address: Some #'s

Dhcp enabled: Yes

Autoconfig enabled: Yes

Autoconfig IP address: More #'s

Subnet mask:More #'s

Default Gateway: Blank

Then typed ipconfig/renew "An error occured while renewing interface LAC: Unable to connect to DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I have a second computer that was given to me and it previously was using dail-up but I have Road Runner and it worked fine.

  1. If you are connecting to a router try to unplug in for a few minutes and see if a reset doesn't fix it. Make sure your network setting are set to auto and you don't have any settings keyed in.

  2. Are you connected to a router or a modem? If so then it should automaticly give you an IP address. If not and you are just connected to a broadband modem, you will need to setup a connection in windows and put in your username and password in order to connect. If you cant still figure it out after this what I would recommend is resetting you router/modem. Give it some time to reset. Good luck!
