Question:

Computer won't connect to LAN, need help?

I have a preexisting LAN network setup (nonwireless). I just plugged my laptop into the router and it still says the network cable is unplugged. I have another wire connected to this computer and it is fine. I also switched the wires and the connection with this computer is fine. I also reset the router, cable modem, and restarted the laptop. I still can't connect to my network. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

  1. email alexMCpot@hotmail.com an h**l tell u

  2. the smartest way to solve your problem is to use the OSI model...

    Physical Layer:

    1. Try another cable and see if it still cant connect. (Try a cable that is working with other computers)

    2. see if the lights are OK in the router or the switch or the modem.

    3. connect the laptop directly to the modem and see if you get connected.

    Network Layer:

    1. what OS do you have in your laptop?

    2. what IP address are you getting?

       > click start>run>type: cmd

       > in the dos prompt type: ipconfig \all

       > look at the IP address and the gateway address

    3. if the IP address looks like 169.x.x.x > there is something wrong with the dhcp capability of your router

    4. if if you get a different IP address other than 169.x.x.x try to see if you can ping the router

       > click start>run>type: cmd

       > in the dos prompt type: ping <and the IP address of the gateway/router>

tell me the results and we can move forward... :)

  3. err.. you need to rephrase that to make a bit more sense, :). But can it connect to the lan and just not the Internet? or both not work?

  4. check in network connections see if it has a red X if so click it should be ok then

  5. You say there is another cable connected to that computer.  What is that cable connected to?  If you connect 2 cables from one computer to same network, only one of the wires would be used anyway, since both would have same network and netmask and traffic would follow the first route to destination in the routing table.

Does it work on your LAN if you only have a single wire from laptop to LAN without any other cables connected to laptop?

  6. go to control panel, then network connections and change your firewall  settings.
